Hello internet world, it's been a while. Crystal has been working hard at her day job, sketching a lot, so many paintings on the back-burner for future pieces. Fortunately, on an unrelated note, i made chili for dinner.

Here is a little tracing paper color study for a little something, something:

Nothing beats spending an afternoon drawing some fantastic boobs, lol. We shall see if this one moves forward :) if folks like it maybe i'll paint this up.

I'm really trying to get rid of everything i own too... so if you think i would have something you would like, hit me up... i have all kinds of crap. Art, Dvds, television sets, old video game systems, books, cds, knick knacks, some vintage lunchboxes, comic books... all must go. :) <3 to you world. Reach out and really try to reach your full potential- and sit back and really realize how much you can do if you put your mind to it.

Well, after a delay I am attempting a comeback. Life is starting to fall back into a routine and everyday things get easier and easier. Tonight i decided as a special treat I would show you my almost indecipherable sketch stage that most of my art goes through in comparison with the more refined version. This is my usual routine before I attempt an actual painting or fully refined piece of art.

And so on...
Thus you see two stages for my little geisha doodle.
I hoped you enjoyed this little peak into my brain.

Aside from my usual sketching I have been working on tarot card designs and things are coming along. Starting a day job slowed down my productivity a bit, but as i mentioned earlier, things are starting to become routine, so i expect some good things to come, expecially now that the sun is out and spring is well on it's way.

And one last reminder, Glass, Cinder and Thorns at 323 east royal oak is this month! If you are local come on down, Tuesday March 20th and see the work, lots of great artists are involved :)

2010 is the year of the doodle. Not really, but i've been a little pressured lately, lots more to do every day and not enough time to do it all :)

I'll get used to my new schedule soon enough, and i'll be popping out the full paintings soon. The show at 323 is coming up quicker and quicker.

Good evening fellow humans.

I hope everyone is doing well this fine evening. I am really diggin' this mild weather we've been having round here the last few days. Getting some fresh air and seeing other humans again has been quite motivational and inspirational.

Been compiling lists of jobs and goals and things, i'm filling up every scrap of paper in this apartment with notes and doodles and information and research and numbers and graphs... hahaha ok, maybe not graphs, but i swear, its going to come to that. Todays doodle -->

Yesterday and early this morning i spent a great deal of time revamping my website once more. I got rid of all of the older artwork and sketchbook stuff, though i am working on designing a page to display some of my tarot sketches and things of that nature. Good afternoon world, it is i, Crystal, ruler of ... my tiny apartment. Been doing great on motivation lately, i feel like my brain might finally be functioning. After graduation i took a long needed mental holiday, i've still been drawing and doing art, i just wasn't as productive as i could be.

I'm great now despite the fact i've got a slight head cold, and nothing tastes good except coffee. It doesn't help that i've been spending some time outdoors, but it's been warmer these last few days and i've needed to clear my head. It's almost impossible to organize all of the plans and projects that are in my brain meat lately. I'm working on a little mini-zine which i started writing last night. I've also got paintings in the works for my March 20th show at 323 East. I still have tarot cards to finish and i just started my 2nd Munny doll: my Money Munny. Sneak peak preview shot of his back.

Been spending my days waiting. and waiting. FedEx decided the roads were bad today and they didn't have the time to deliver my package which was on their truck all day. Now i am super exhausted.

I had a sketch date with a good friend and spent my day painting. Here are a couple secretive progress shots for a couple new paintings i'm working on. ;)
they will be available for viewing soon.

Interesting Tidbit: in the original version of "the little mermaid" the mermaid falls in love with the prince but when she gets her legs, every step she took was as painful as walking on knives and she bled from her feet constantly. After she failed time and time again to get the prince to fall for her, she dies in the ocean - turning to foam and doomed to be forever spiritless in the afterlife.

Now back to more reading and sleep. I'm trying to get through an audiobook on public schools which is totally enthralling and informative. It makes me want to force any of my friends with children to home school.

I'm also re-reading cat's cradle by vonnegut and want to get through some of the other novels on my shelf that i may or may not have finished. plus... as you grow older... life perspectives start to change.. and a book that may have had one certain meaning to you when you were a child or youth... may be interpreted in a completely different way upon a re-read or as time passes... I've found this to be true in many cases. Two in particular were "the bell jar" by sylvia plath and "catcher in the rye" by salinger.

digital fun and winter blues

I'm attempting to make a more frequent effort to update my blogger. There is no way i can maintain an every day post as some do, I'm just not that interesting, haha! More like, i would forget but more than once a month will be a nice change.

Today I decided to remain indoors due to adverse weather so i played around with photoshop for a while. This is my doodle of the day done digitally. I'm also starting one of my paintings for the 323 east show i've got coming up very soon! I shall keep updates on that coming frequently and I hope some of you will be able to come down and check it out!

I work digitally very infrequently, despite the fact that one of the last classes i took was predominately digital. I was kicking out tarot cards at about 7 or 8 a week, but as far as digital work, it was more like a single piece every month. I feel less confident and less interested in doing things on the computer, however, I am trying to get over it and up my digital skills.

Holding a physical thing that I've created means so much more to me than to see an image on a screen that I'd have to run out and get printed. But because i'm in the process of coming up with a small zine or comic, I figure coloring digitally would be the way to go. I have no time for full page rendered paintings, though i think i'd love to try the idea out :) If ya'll have any ideas or things you'd like to see my take on, leave me a comment. I'm always up for suggestions :)

This evening was not a disappointment in the least - i had a fantastic time. My dear friend Sara dropped by for i desperately needed to set up an impromptu photo-shoot at my house. I need to get a good headshot over to the wonderful and patient folks at 323 east royal oak in preperation for a show that i'm participating a couple months from now.
Super excited about it too~!

So, for the first time ever, i actually enjoyed getting photographed which is very atypical for me.
We managed to pull of some great shots of a fake tarot reading with my deck. I'm still debating on the head shot - it is between something really professional and something more my style.

Yeah, i know i never go with the totally professional choice, haha, but there is always a first time for everything. My top choice is the tarot card pose below. and another is the new profile picture with the lunchboxes. I guess if i show you all of the contestants, maybe we could have a little "vote" on it.

On another note, the deck is coming along nicely. No problems and it most certainly will be finished in time for the spring show at the College for Creative Studies. Now off to sleep for tomorrow the job search continues. Wish me luck, my fellow man. Saturday already... geeze.

i spent mine with some friends, ate way to much food and overindulged on turkey (my favorite part of this holiday)

that, as strange as it may be to complain about, i really despise google's new favicon.

it's a very trivial thing to be upset about, but honestly, i find the new icon an affront to my eyes.
(i found this comparison online to better illustrate, whoever created it, don't kill me)

so honestly, i like the oldest one the best though, eventually i got used to the lower case "g". this new one... sucks.

just had to get that off my chest. thanks for listening.

oh and i just wasted like, 15 minutes driving around to go to a gas station and all of them are closed... i could've swore everything around me was 24 hours... especially speedy-q... oh well, i'll have to take a jaunt tomorrow morning before classes....

so, after procrastinating forever since i had to learn a whole new interface i wasn't familiar with, i finally set up my etsy shop. thus far i have a whopping... one print :) but don't worry, i'll get better the more i do it. im doing a limited run (15) of my cheshire cat piece. i'll be getting them printed up on high quality paper, mailing them either in tubes or bubble wrap envelopes if i can find one the size i need. they are 11x17 in size and if you would like more details check out my listing!

so i've been working at a comic shop as a favor for a friend for the holiday and you wouldn't believe the interesting individuals who shop at comic book stores. anyway i also brought myself a super nintendo emulator (also being the holiday, many of the regulars are out of town celebrating so the store is slow and i have all the time in the world for art, video games, internet browsing and comic book reading)

so at home, i've been playing "mother 3" the sequel to "earthbound"

Hello everyone,

haven't updated in a bit, too much crazy going on in life i suppose. i finally hit up the zoo and bought a few of my posters and checked out the show. there were so many more pieces than i remembered. i must say it was great to see my poster up on the advertisements for the show and such and hanging in the zoofari market for sale.

on another note:
i finally got my work down to 323 east in royal oak.
i should be appearing on the website within a few days and my work will be hanging and available for purchase through the gallery for three to six months!

I did five pieces for them this time: hanging bunny, fairytale, dark side of the rainbow, cheshire cat and moon landing.

hmm.. in recent news
i attended the opening at cpop which was fantastic
i'd never been to an opening before
but i think i'd do it again, free beer, lots of artwork, and people everywhere that looked familiar but i just couldn't place where i knew them. don't you just hate it when that happens?

323 east has agreed to show some of my work and

tomorrow i drop a couple pieces of in the D for the student show at CCS. I got a pretty fab review and i got a whopping seven pieces in the show (be it some are 5x7 but still, a nice lucky number) so excitement ensues as the semester comes to a close. my summer will be full of painting and outdoor activity and hopefully i'll have some amazing ideas to close out my final semester at CCS

after eight years, its about time i graduate, wouldn't you say?

i seriously killed the most gigantic spider today after grabbing a sub from quiznos. as i was about to walk into my home... there it was, blocking the entrance of my doorway. i stopped in my tracks.... trying to come up with a plan of action, any plan would do. i hesitated, stared into it's eyes.... and he stared right back.

this dude was the size of a quarter in body alone... with the legs he had to be like, two inches. still frozen, i begin to panic... i can't live out in the hallway the rest of my life and i cannot be a pussy and call for help, anyone i know lives 15-20 minutes out of the way to just rush over and kill a spider.

so, finally, in a fit of hunger and fear i booked it back to my vehicle. i fumbled with the key for the trunk, cursing under my breath and my delicious mesquite chicken sub slowly getting colder the longer i'm under attack. throwing things left and right i finally come across the can i was looking for... carburetor cleaner. this should do the trick.

end of story. i ate my sub. it was exquisite. then i painted this:

Today i went on a journey. Not a horribly far distance, just to Lift in Royal Oak Michigan. I have finally jumped on the bandwagon and procured for myself a MUNNY!

I've been wanting to design one as long as i've known about them. I also got myself a delicious Kozik smoking lighter pictured at the right along side of my mini munny and bear.

this will be exciting. i'll be posting process and finals when its done :D
wish me luck on my first vinyl toy endeavor. On a side note, i've stocked up on 70$ worth of canvas, and i'm working my butt off right now trying to be productive. It is always unfortunate when the productivity has to be forced. I think i intimidated myself a bit this week, but today i'm getting back on track :)

New paintings soon - as soon as i borrow or buy a digital camera. Some larger works are in the process as well as some really fun smaller pieces. Most of those will be (hopefully) taken down to 323 east in royal oak soon. I have my review at CCS first, than freedom.

I remember as a child enjoying all the old sitcoms; andy griffith, leave it to beaver, and of course, the golden girls. one of the very few memories i have left of my grandmother (she passed when i was very young) was watching the golden girls together.

So, today and yesterday, besides the usual, i spent most of my day in front of my monitor working on revamping my website to add a certain element of professionalism. important stuff. remaining positive and working hard, doing all i can to keep this going.

Putting together separate scanned images just is not my favorite activity i guess.

Vintage Lunchboxes

So, here it is. My secret passion. I've been collecting lunchboxes since i was about... fourteen or fifteen i would guess. I had just started high school. Prior to the vintage boxes, i would grab any random one off the shelf at a Meijer and Peel the sticker off so i could decorate it myself. I still have a few of these hand decorated boxes as well, but these are my pride and joy.

above we have a tiny part of a plastic mario box, pac man plastic from the old cartoon, a delicious popples lunchbox, a metal aladdin pac man box from 1980, then the A-team and another popples box.

In this second pic we have: Teddy Ruxpin, the Care Bear Cousins, My little Pony and The Cabbage Patch kids.

I have so many lined on my kitchen cupboards, some are stacked two deep. I rotate now and again to keep things fresh.

Well so much for going to bed. I couldn't help it, i got excited about my lunchbox blog. So now really, one last cigarette and it's off to snooze a bit before class in the morning. Goodnite internet.

appealing more to the children's book market... and what do i do? lol... well, in other news, i've decided my best bet and first move will be to start submitting to some children's book publishers. my style lends itself well to that market, even though my content and sense of humor will not be appriciated in some aspects of the venue.

it's easy enough for me to censor myself though :) and i've also got the novi comic convention coming up next month, though i dont think i'll be able to afford a table, i will surely be there at least one day to show my work around to publishers. i used to know so many people at the comic cons... when i was 17-20 i would get a table every year, go out with the creators after the show for dinner and parties. it was the life, a geeky life, but fun as hell :)

so yes, tonite, i finally painted on this red canvas i had floating around. i'd started something like this on it, but it wasn't going in the direction i wanted. so here we are, a little rotation and more definition and i'm starting to get somewhere. i'll be finishing this piece up tomorrow or wednesday hopefully, for critique in senior studio on thursday. i also have this great, calm, buddhist looking elephant piece i'm also submitting. quite the contrast it will be.

now that it's three in the morning and i'm beginning to talk like yoda, i think it's time to retire.
though one final note, at the comic convention in novi this year, we have special guest carrie fisher to look forward to! instead of praising her for her role as leia though, i really want to tell her how much i enjoyed her performance in "Drop Dead Fred"

p.p.s. the storm trooper that said "these are not the droids we're looking for" is also gonna be there.

So, i know that when i look at other blogs, or artist websites, being an artist myself it's always interesting seeing other people's work space. The things which one has around to inspire them, it's all very telling. So here it is, a shot of my (recently cleaned up) workspace.

I'm going to post a shot of some of my collectibles as well soon. I'm a big fan of anything vintage, especially cheesy eighties toys and lunchboxes. I have a vast metal Aladdin lunchbox assortment also tons of Pac-man and Mario toys.

So today in the studio i did a small marker drawing in ye old sketchbook. The Disney Cheshire cat in my style. I'll share it with you now:

Detroit Zoo Poster Competition

So, last month the illustration department at the College for Creative Studies was approached to do a poster design for the Detroit Zoo. There were 54 submissions, here is mine:I was trying to go for something that would appeal to everyone and had to stray away from my typical sarcasm and humor. I started with the animal designs, then played around with the color fields on the computer - which is again out of my normal element.

Yesterday, the zoo announced the winners: four honorable mentions, a first through fifth place and a best of show - which is the poster to be used and somehow, i took best of show!!:

Now, my poster will be used at the detroit zoo as the official poster, my art becomes part of the zoo's permanent collection and i also received a scholarship!

So, after i watched "The Royal Tenembaums" I was inspired to do this little painting in my sketchbook. The movie was pretty decent. I could even look past the fact that Ben Stiller was in it even though he is my mortal enemy (basically i just find him irritating and a lot less than funny). so here it is. dunno why but i just love this piece, and i'm typically the critic, especially when it come to my own work. plus this one was just totally fun to work on.

so i got a message from a friend i havent talked to in months... she had broken into one of my accounts and trash talked me to someone i hadnt talked to in years. she apologized. for a lot of things... and i'm just not sure how to or if i should reply... she was pretty nasty but i've known this chick since forever - like ninth grade... lol...
she was my oldest friend, and yes, i did and do on occasion miss this person. we lived together and were very close for a long time. i just dont think i know how to so easily forgive and forget. or her intentions really. is the message just for her own piece of mind, like, ok i did wrong but i apologized or is she trying to be my friend again. because in that case trust is long lost and i'm just really not sure if it'll ever be there again between us...

such a cute desktop, no? damn i desperately need a new computer... half the time when i try to save an illustrator or photoshop document (which could be hours and hours of work) my computer will freeze up and i'll have to force quit stuff and then i loose everything. so yeah... it's time. as soon as i get my college refund i will be purchasing a new computer... i cant seem to force myself to switch to PC though... so i'll probably be spending much more money than i want to.

ok, so not scary so much, but i made this today. Its strange how caught up you can get on the computer. I'm still working on a business card and promotional postcard for my class, but find myself distracted by things such as British comedy "black books" or a giant painting i'm working on which is really just a doodle, or small things like this, instead of concentrating on the task at hand. Ive been looking at some amazing art lately, and enjoying the finer things in life, like today i treated myself to barbecue chicken pizza. absolutely delectable. its nearing time for sleep, though my regular sleep habits have been totally thrown off due to staying up till six or eight a.m. and sleeping until two in the afternoon... and tomorrow i work in the morning, which doesn't work well when i'm being an insomniac. my desktop has turned into a barrage of photo reference, weird things, versions of files (all with weird names so i never remember what i'm doing) bah... that's how i feel about that. well i should sketch more, or do my homework... lol...
